June 18th, 2011 - Hagerman Battles Vehicle Fire on Sunrise Highway

On the afternoon of June 18th, Hagerman responded to a reported vehicle fire on the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway near the station road bridge.  First to respond in was 1st Assistant Chief Tony Citarella.  While en-route he noticed a large column of smoke on sunrise highway and realized the crews would be put to work.  Once on scene he confirmed a fully involved pickup truck and had the alarm reactivated.  Engines 6 and 5 responded into the scene and placed one 1" 3/4 hand line in operation and pulled a second line as a backup.  Crews battled the blaze under the hot sun and quickly knocked down the majority of the fire but had to deal with a ruptured fuel tank.  Foam was added into the line to smother the flames which allowed the crew to overhaul what was left of the truck.  The call was placed under control within 20 minutes and the highway was opened back up for traffic within 40 minutes.
